US-NREL cities high wind potential
of Batanes
The United States-National Renewable Energy Laboratory has identified
in its international wind resource-mapping project that Batanes possess
a considerable wind regime that can be tapped for energization purposes.
Under its Philippine category, the US-NREL cites Batanes along with Cuyo
Island in Palawan, Catanduanes, and Tagaytay as places with high-sustained
wind strength.
Authorities are in agreement on the advantages of using wind energy as
an alternative power source. Wind energy is clean and therefore would
not cause any pollution. It is adequate and sustainable because it is
abundant everywhere. It is also cheap, and the cost of installation and
maintenance is very competitive. The system has no record of major accidents.
In fact, most people support wind energy and encourage authorities to
further develop the system.
