The
Ivatans' Cry
By: Ms. Iris Fagar (The Batanes Chronicle
1981)
Ivatan, dear Ivatan
Do you hear the loud, anguished cry?
Turn not your deaf ears;
Close not your blind eyes;
Stifle not your bootless cries;
Bore holes into clogged auditory canals
See through that which is visible, and yet not seen
And best - let yourself cry to the world
"Ivatan - Makabagong Ivatan."
Ivatan, dear Ivatan
What has culture, time history injected into your mentality?
Slave not to thoughts colonial;
Enrich not with things colonial;
Parrot not the classic tongue;
Be guided by our forebears nobled
Look to things that are our own
And best - be one, through the language: Ivatan.
Ivatan, dear Ivatan
Why not best identify and be, what you essentially are: Ivatan
And waste not our heroes blood spilled for the race;
Bury not their noble visions and ideals;
Live up to their virtues upheld in the hearts of our native soil
And best - enjoin with me now and answer the call Cry, "Ivatan - Mabuhay."
