My first visit to Batanes was last March 1996. I was with the group of
56 MAVE students who had there Teaching Practicum a requirement for the
M. A. course. It was love at first sight. I remember a lot of people waited
for us at the airport, including the wife of the governor. I felt the
warm welcome of the people instantly. All places seem near. I didn't see
public vehicles then. We had to walk… it was a welcome change.
We crossed to one island. It was thrilling experience, what with the big
waves and strong winds. I must have prayed so hard. I thought that was
the end me. I looked for a department store. There was none. Two liters
of coca cola costs P50.00.
I would walk alone during night time. Unafraid, unmindful of any harm.
Attending mass in the dawn reminded me of misa de gallo. It was always
cold. I always wore a jacket every time I go out. I experienced riding
in the boat with some students. I waited for the sunset. It was a joy
to be hold. Together with some friends, we called ourselves The Sunset
Club. It was unforgettable.
My impressions? I am touched by the simplicity and sincerity of the folks.
It's a place reached by modernization but it values remain untouched.
There is no distinction between the rich and the poor. Everyone is given
the respect due to him. It has rolling hills, lash and long dusty roads.
I realized how scarcely populated the area is. Rizal High School's population
in Pasig City is even bigger.
They speak good Filipino and English. They are educated people. They are
soft spoken and shy. They are very simple and transparent. They sing well.
They are very pious. The church is always filled with people. Even small
children participate in the celebration of the mass.
There are no crimes. It's a peaceful. It is very clean. Even the Hospital
is so well maintained.
Manila and Batanes are poles apart. It's a haven of rest where a person
regains his soul. It's the best place for people who are tired of fast-paced
life.
An Ivatan can best contribute to his community by studying hard to get
a degree and then established his profession in Batanes. There should
be efforts made by all sectors to preserve the tradition of the people.
An Ivatan should be a role model to rest of the Filipinos. Let Batanes
a showcase of Philippine culture.
Ipulas (non-Ivatan) should visit Batanes more often. Their visit should
always provide community service and outreach activities to connect/expose
the Ivatans to the rest of the country. Ipulas should support education
of those poor but ambitious students.
I hope the Ivatans will remain simple and youthful. THE PEOPLE OF BATANES
ARE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE…BECAUSE THEY HAVE GODS IN THEIR HEARTS.
Mabuhay! God Bless!
